Beekeepers: Are you motivated by the chance to earn money, or do you also have a love of bees?

We recently had a hive relocated from our yard by a local beekeeping group member. But our first attempt to get the bees removed was an eye-opener. The fellow said the bees were unmovable but that he would kill them for $150. (This despite the fact we’d told him my husband was unemployed and that we did not want to kill the bees).

Then I went to a lecture on beekeeping, and the speaker said the hive was movable. So we tried again. The man that came out rode his bike, added a bee box, and came back 2 days later to remove the bees. He reluctantly accepted a pound of organic coffee and $20. In the meantime, my husband got to talk with him off and on for hours and learned a lot.

The 2nd man obviously had a love of bees and wasn’t in it for the money, but I’m afraid a lot of people get beekeepers like man #1. Where do you stand, or what experiences have you had with friends who keep bees?
